SCARCE NANTUCKET MID-20TH CENTURY, POST-WWII AMERICAN FOLK ART, VINTAGE, CIRCA 1970, SIGNED ‘FARNUM,’ LOOP HANDLED WICKER & TEAK BASKET PURSE, featuring TRIPLE LEAPING DOLPHIN, WHITE POLYMER AFFIXED FIGURES on TEAK TROPICAL HARDWOOD, OVAL LID MEDALLION, with THREE OTHER AFFIXED TEAK OVAL PLATES, on LID UNDERSIDE, BASKET BASIN INTERIOR & on BOTTOM, SIGNED with INCISED, HIGH CASE SIGNATURE ‘FARNUM’ on BASEPLATE
[The lower leaping dolphin figure has some minor loss occurring on its tail. No attempt has been made to reconstitute this area or the even smaller loss of material occurring on the middle dolphin, also seen on its tail, clearly signs the bag previously snagged something and caused this, in the 45 to 55 years since it was made. The rear lid hinges are also slightly damaged, with the lid’s former wicker looped hinges, being replaced by soft rawhide. These conditions are a result of the basket purse being previously used and not just put up on a shelf and looked at. It still has embedded dust in the woven wicker of its lid, demonstrating its vintage pedigree. The wicker basket’s sidewalls, as well as the wicker weaving of the basket’s lid, are both in very fine, undamaged condition, with no material loss, breaks, stains, dents, dings or deformities. The four carved, affixed oval teak tropical hardwood medallion plates are all without any noticeable damage or loss. Signed ‘Farnum’ on the baseplate. Very nice. Honest.]
